IIITM-K Develops App for Coffee Growers

State owned Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) has launched an application named Kaapi Soil Health Management and Monitoring (Kshemam) app to provide soil nutrient information and fertiliser recommendation for coffee plantation owners.

The Kshemam app, which is available on www.indiacoffeesoils. net, a GIS-enabled system for the Commerce Ministry, will assist the farmers in proper identification of optimum levels of fertiliser use. The app has been developed by the IIITM-K’s Computational and Data Analytics, Geo-Infomatics and Agri- Informatics teams.

KSHEMAM app was unveiled and dedicated to the nation by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Smt Nirmala Sitharaman in Bengaluru recently.

Farmers by entering information like geographic coordinates or their administrative divisions (state->district->taluk->village) can check the soil property, nutrient status and fertiliser recommendations for their land. In addition, the spatial variation of individual nutrients can also be thematically visualised with the help of this app.

By using this app, the farmers can generate fertiliser recommendation, nutrient advisory and soil health card in English, Kannada, Tamil or Malayalam.

National Bureau of Soil and Land Use Planning at the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) has already done GPS enabled soil sampling and nutrient analysis in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu to provide correct information to the coffee growers.

“The application is developed entirely using Open Source Technology,” said Ajith Kumar R of IIITM-K. “It has been developed with a responsive Design and tested for compatibility with any screen sizes of tablets and smartphones.”

Dr Rajasree M S, Director, IIITM-K is of the view that KSHEMAM is an excellent example where the diverse expertise of three institutions has been properly integrated to develop a useful information system for the nation that can be extended to several other crops

Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are the leading producers of coffee in India.
