Renowned Agri-expert D S Athwal Passes Away

Chandigarh: Renowned agriculture scientist and geneticist Dilbagh Singh Athwal, who is one of the pioneers of the Green Revolution in the 1960s, passed away in the US. He was 88.

 

Often called the ‘Father of Wheat Revolution’, Athwal is credited with developing world’s first grain pearl millet hybrid ‘Hybrid Bajra 1’. He was an associate of “father of global Green Revolution”, the late Dr Norman Borlaug.

 

Athwal also developed PV 18 and Kalayan-227, two high-yielding wheat varieties, the last one named after the village ‘Kalyanpur’ in Punjab where he was born in 1928.

 

Athwal he was conferred with Padma Bhushan and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, the highest Indian award in the science category.
