Kharif Crop Sowing Crosses 130.74 Lakh Hectare

New Delhi: The total sown area of kharif crops as on June 23, 2017, according to the Agriculture Ministry, stands at 130.74 lakh hectare (LH), as compared to 119.28 lakh hectare in the same period in the previous year, registering an increase of 9 percent.

 

According to the latest figures furnished by the Agriculture Ministry, rice has been sown in 16.70 lakh hectare, pulses in 5.97 lakh ha, coarse cereals in 17.71 lakh ha, oilseeds in 11.24 lakh ha and cotton in 24.70 lakh ha.

 

Barring pulses and jute & mesta, the area under kharif crops has shown an increase from the year-ago period.

 

Sugarcane has been sown in 47.52 lakh hectare so far this season as against 44.82 LH in the year-ago period.

 

As kharif crops are heavily rain fed, the prediction of a normal monsoon by IMD is proving beneficial to the sowing of the kharif crops.
