CMRFI Takes Initiatives to Stop Juvenile Fishing

Kochi: With a view to stopping juvenile fishing, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has put in place initiatives for the effective implementation of the Minimum Legal Size (MLS) restrictions.

 

Speaking at a function to mark the launch of 21-day Summer School organised by the Fishery Resource Assessment Division of the CMFRI to train young researchers on advanced methods of fish stock assessment, CMFRI Director A Gopalakrishnan said that CMFRI will call a meeting of all the coastal states so that the uniform implementation of the MLS restrictions becomes a reality.

 

Reiterating that overcapacity is a serious issue, Gopalakrishnan, in his presidential address, dwelt on the major issues related to the fisheries sector and blamed the overcapacity of fishing boats, climate change, misuse of juvenile fishes, and poor condition of fish stock for decrease in the of marine fishery resources.

 

Stating that the policies in fisheries sector are driven by the fish stock assessment studies, Kerala Fisheries Director S Karthikeyan announced a collaboration of the Fisheries Department with CMFRI to promote cage fish farming in Kerala apart from exploring the potential of deep sea fishing and identifying potential fishing zone.
